About the Series
This is the third drama series in renowned writer Deon Opperman’s trilogy - the other two being Kruispad and Hartland. Donkerland (dark land) narrates the story of seven generations of one family against the backdrop of the changing landscape of South Africa over a period of 158 years (1838–1996). Each episode plays off against the sociopolitical backdrop of the day, like the Great Trek, battles against the Zulus, the Anglo-Boer Wars, the Great Depression of 1929, the 1948 election, the Border War and the 1976 Soweto Riots until the transition to a democratic South Africa.
