About the Movie

“I dedicate this film to all militants of the African cause.”— Ousmane Sembène. When, during WWII, French troops come to a Diola village to conscript the men and confiscate the rice, the women hide the crop and the elders consult with the gods, but events slowly escalate into a horrific tragedy. Emitai is based on an actual incident and filmed on location in the village of Dimbering. When the French attempted to control the lives of these African villagers too minutely, to the point of regulating how they worshipped their gods, a general revolt broke out which was met with severe reprisals. This film explores that time and the socio-political impact of French oppression on the Senegalese people. On its initial release, the French government ordered strict censorship of this film.
