The spine-chilling new docuseries that takes a closer look at the life and crimes of the notorious South African serial killer, Stewart Wilken.

In 1990, Stewart Wilken, better known as “Boetie Boer”, went on an unhinged killing spree in the city of Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) shortly after being released from prison. When he was finally apprehended, Wilken openly took detectives through every detail of his crimes including his motivations for these horrific acts.

The audio from these interviews was made public for the first time in the series and it becomes easy to understand why detectives were shocked to their core.

Series director Jasyn Howe, who won Best SA Short Documentary at Jozi Film Festival for Dula, also highlights the fact that Wilken was “a highly unusual serial killer” due to the lack of consistency throughout his killing spree: “Unlike most serial killers, he had more than one type of victim: predominantly female sex workers and young boys, usually street children, across multiple races. He also claimed to engage in necrophilia and cannibalism with his victims.”

Due to the nature of his confessions, Executive Head of Content at Showmax, Allan Sperling, strongly advises viewer discretion: “This is not for sensitive viewers, especially hearing the description of the crimes in the killer’s own words.”

The 5-part series is the latest true crime venture from Showmax, following the success of Devilsdorp, Steinheist, and Rosemary’s Hitlist.
