The big winners of the 17th SAFTAs

The latest edition of the annual ceremony celebrated the best in South African content with Multichoice once again taking home the most awards.

Our commitment to providing a stage for African storytellers to shine has never been stronger. Their narratives, their passion, and their talent are what drive us to excel," said Nomsa Philiso, CEO: General Entertainment for the MultiChoice Group.

The final season of the popular sitcom Hotel bagged four awards including another Best Actor in a TV Comedy award for the legendary actor James Borthwick.

Gaia, the visually stunning eco-horror film that premiered at SXSW, was crowned Best Feature Film while filmmaker Jaco Bouwer won Best Achievement in Directing – Feature Film. The film also took home two awards in the technical categories.

Binnelanders featured all over the TV Soap categories and won three of the four acting awards, only missing out on the Golden Horn for Best Actor in a TV Soap.

Legacy was crowned the very best telenovela in the country, facing stiff competition in this category. Iconic actress Michelle Botes was handed the award for Best Actress in a Telenovela.

The third instalment of Tali’s hilarious journey, Tali’s Joburg Diary, won four awards including Best Achievement in Directing – TV Comedy and Best Achievement in Scriptwriting – TV Comedy. Tali’s Wedding Diary and Tali’s Baby Diary similarly won big in 2019 and 2022 as the most-awarded comedy shows at the SAFTAs.

Other notable wins included Best Achievement in Directing – TV Drama for Donkerbos, Best Structured or Docu-Reality Show for Sex in Afrikaans and The River’s Lawrence Maleka winning Best Actor in a Telenovela.
