Dwaalster offers something fresh and unique. Once you meet the quirky and strange characters of Maanhaarsdrif, you’ll just want to get to know them better!

The show focuses on investigative journalist, Annabel, as she encounters the colourful characters living in the town where she was born. After uncovering a severe case of corruption in the City of Cape Town, Annabel fled to Maanhaarsdrif fearing for her life. She quickly notices that not everything is as it seems in the strange little town, where everyone is obsessed with the sky above.

Viewers will find themselves utterly intrigued and invested in the unusual group of characters in Dwaalster. Firstly, there’s Lettie, the baker who reads tea leaves and decorates tarts with the faces of aliens. Then there’s Ragel-Lee, the incredibly socially awkward police officer, who also happens to be Annabel’s sister. We also have Frans, the rugby fanatic who is a talented opera singer and Gina, the ex-biker who never stays in one place for long, but somehow found herself drawn to the little town.

These complex characters are portrayed by an exceptional cast! Dwaalster is led by Tinarie van Wyk Loots, veteran South African actor of hit shows like Fynskrif (link to show). The show also includes legends of South African flim and television, June van Merch, known for her roles in Die Boekklub, Geraldina Die Tweede, Die Byl  and Albert Maritz, the Fleur du Cap Award winner with a massive filmography that includes movies such as Invictus and Winnie

Dwaalster was created by South African icon, Nicola Hanekom, known for her role in Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom among many others. According to Hanekom, the idea for the show came to life when she travelled through the Karoo and started thinking of the unique, desolate environment and the people she met. Along with the area’s popular stargazing and the fact that it’s home to the famous MeerKAT radio telescope, the idea for Dwaalster started to come together.

The concept was picked up by Marche Media, one of South Africa’s leading production companies that are responsible for internationally renowned and award-winning films such as Poppie Nongena, Die Seemeeu and Kanarie. They’ve also produced multiple successful television series such as Waterfront, Die Byl, Die Spreeus and the ever-popular fan favourite, Boer Soek ’n Vrou.

Dwaalster is a hit drama that has been widely praised for its unique storyline and for offering a fresh storyline for viewers. In 2019, the show received 2 SAFTA nominations in the categories of Best Achievement in Directing and Best Achievement in Sound Design for a TV Drama.
