The 14th instalment of the South African Film & Television Awards takes place in March and we’re celebrating another year of outstanding African storytelling under the theme of #LoveSATalent.

The River is once again the most nominated show with 15 nominations as it continues to build upon its winning recipe with outstanding performances, exceptional production value and storylines that keep audiences engaged. From Best Actress and Best Actor to Best Telenovela, expect this telenovela to be a big winner again at this year’s awards.

Hot on their heels are Isibaya and Lockdown which also dominate several categories, receiving 11 nominations each. Isibaya’s presence is felt in nearly every telenovela category, where the show will mostly compete with The River and Arendsvlei. Arendsvlei is the new kid on the block from MultiChoice. It’s a gripping telenovela that also celebrates a healthy stack of nominations for its first entry into the SAFTA’s. Also notable are Isithembiso with 5 nominations, The Throne with 2 nominations and one of Africa’s most loved telenovelas, The Queen which is also solidly in the telenovela mix with nominations for Best Scriptwriting, Best Supporting Actor. All three  are also up for the hotly contested award for Most Popular TV Soap / Telenovela.

Joining the Most Popular TV Soap / Telenovela race are Suidooster and Binnelanders which also both feature in the tv soap categories. Between them they are up to receive further acclaim for performances, directing, sound and Best TV Soap.

Lockdown will face stiff competition in the drama categories from The Republic which received 10 nominations and is expected to do well at the awards. Nothing is clear cut though in the drama categories which are stacked with a rich choice of deserving nominees from successful dramas Die Byl, Die Spreeus, Dwaalster, The Girl from St Agnes, iThemba and audience favourite eHostela.

In the reality categories Op Seer Se Spoor, Living the Dream with Somizi, Yobe, Elders: Japan and the very popular Kokkedoor all received nominations for their work.

Lastly, the Feature Film Category for this year’s SAFTAs is headlined by the remake of the iconic Afrikaans film, Fiela Se Kind. The film has received an incredible 11 nominations. Die Begrafnis is this year’s stand-out short film.

The winners of the technical awards will be announced on the 27th of March, while the main awards take place on the 28th March in Johannesburg. MultiChoice Studios is proud of all the producers and talent that have contributed to another successful award season and wish all the nominees every success.
