Devilsdorp is a four-part docuseries about one of the most shocking killing sprees in South African history. The story has so many twists and turns, it will leave viewers dizzy.

In 2016, a small town in South Africa was turned upside down when professionals started disappearing on their way to work-related appointments. Four years before, a string of brutal murders took place, with the police believing them to be related to the occult. As the story unwrapped, the shocking truth about a master-manipulator, a religious cult, extreme co-dependency, financial fraud, and minors being exposed to murder were discovered. Devilsdorp delves into the details of this reign of terror with exclusive interviews and information that has never been shared with the public.

“Showmax’s local true crime series, Devilsdorp, has been called SA’s answer to Tiger King.” – Times Live

“It is bizarre, shocking, terrifying and brilliant.” – Mail & Guardian

“And it is both mesmerising and revolting. I have a feeling that this Showmax original is going to be a South African best seller.” – Weekend Special

“The production can compete with any international documentary. The narrative is clear, and the use of archival footage is eloquently spun in-between the interviews. The series is triggering, authentic, and graphic at times. This is what I call a ‘down the rabbit hole’ kind of show.” – The Daily Vox

Devilsdorp launched on 29 July and was later announced to have broken the record for the most hours watched in its first four days on the streaming service, Showmax. The show outperformed international hits such as Game of Thrones and The Handmaid’s Tale. For the first time in South Africa an accompanying podcast was also launched after the series aired to unravel further details about this chilling case.

Here are five bizarre details about the show:

  1. One of the first journalists who started covering the case, fell in love with one of the convicted killers, who was only a teenager at the time of the killing spree.
  2. The lead investigator of the case compares himself to Chuck Norris.
  3. The mastermind behind the killings is claimed to have told people she is a 42nd-generational witch.
  4. The mastermind’s right-hand woman got her children involved in the murders, with the youngest only 14 when she was witness and participant to a gruesome murder.
  5. She also made the group believe that there was an orphanage in another country for children of Satanists who were rescued and convinced them to donate large sums of money to the fictional orphanage.
